Title : Hematological responses of Rohu Fish (Labeo rohita) to dietary supplementation with moringa leaf powder
Abstract:
Drumstick (Moringa oleifera) is a significant tree recognized for its extensive range of medicinal properties, which include antioxidant capacity, anti-inflammatory effects, regulation of blood glucose levels, management of cholesterol, antimicrobial activity, hepatoprotective properties, potential anticancer effects, and enhancement of immune function. A 60-day experimental study was conducted to evaluate the impact of Moringa Leaf powder on the haematological and growth parameters of Rohu fish (Labeo rohita). It is well established that the quality of water and the nutritional composition of feed critically influence these parameters in aquaculture. Five distinct feed formulations, each containing 35% crude protein, were developed: control feed, 2.5% Moringa Leaf Meal (MLM), 5% MLM, 7.5% MLM, and 10% MLM. The feed was directed at 4% of the body weight of the fish. The results demonstrated that MLM significantly enhanced both the haematological profiles and growth metrics of fingerling Rohu fish. Remarkably, blood parameters such as white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), and platelet counts were significantly uplifted in fish taking a diet supplemented with 7.5% MLM. Moreover, Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) were highest in the control group, while Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) made it to its zenith in the group receiving 10% MLM. Additionally, haemoglobin levels and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) were markedly improved in the diet containing 10% MLM. Growth parameters, encompassing mean weight gain and mean length gain, were significantly enhanced in fish fed a diet composed of 7.5% MLM; similar trends were observed for percentage weight gain and specific growth rate. As a result, it is suggested that the inclusion of 7.5% and 10% MLM be prioritized for optimal aquaculture practices. Nevertheless, further laboratory investigations are warranted to elucidate the full potential of Moringa Leaf, which is known to contain important phytochemicals, isolated compounds, and vital nutrients.
