Abstract:

Chinese aquaculture has experienced remarkable growth over the past four decades, making China the world's leading aquaculture producer and a major player in food security. This overview examines the historical development of Chinese aquaculture, the main production systems, the challenges faced by the sector, and its development prospects. The information was compiled from recent scientific literature, FAO reports, and publications from international organizations. The results show that the development of aquaculture in China has been supported by economic reforms, technological advances, genetic improvement of species, intensification of production systems (fish ponds, floating cages, agriculture-integrated fish farming), recirculation systems (RAS), and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA). However, the sector it still faces several challenges, particularly related to diseases, the degradation of water quality, climate effects, the limited availability of natural resources, and the growing demands for environmental sustainability. Development prospects rely on modernizing infrastructure, digitizing operations, strengthening biosecurity, improving environmental management, technological innovation, and promoting sustainable aquaculture. The Chinese experience serves as a reference model that could inspire aquaculture development strategies in developed countries, especially in Africa.
