Title : Aquafeed and nutrition

Abstract:

It is interesting to know that  Aquafeed and nutrition are fundamental to successful and sustainable aquaculture. A balanced feed containing appropriate protein, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals promotes rapid growth, good health and efficient feed utilization. The emerging use of alternative proteins, algae, insects, biotechnology and precision feeding is helping the aquaculture industry move toward more sustainable and environmentally responsible food production.

Aquafeed means a  specially formulated feed used for the growth, health, reproduction and survival of aquatic animals such as fish, shrimp, prawns, molluscs and other cultured aquatic species. Good nutrition is one of the most important factors determining the productivity and profitability of aquaculture.

Aquaculture animals require nutrients for:Growth and development,Energy production,Tissue formation and repair,Reproduction,Immune function and disease resistance,Maintaining normal physiological functions

A properly balanced feed improves feed conversion ratio (FCR), reduces production costs, and minimizes nutrient waste in water.

Major Nutrients in Aquafeed… Proteins
Protein is essential for muscle growth, tissue formation, enzymes, hormones, and immunity. Common sources include:Fish meal,Soybean meal,Pea and other plant proteins,Insect meal,Algal proteins and Single-cell proteins. Lipids…Lipids provide concentrated energy and essential fatty acids. Marine species particularly require suitable levels of omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA. Carbohydrates..Carbohydrates provide energy and can reduce the use of protein as an energy source. Their utilization varies considerably among fish and shrimp species. Vitamins
Vitamins are required in small quantities for metabolism, immunity, growth, and reproduction. They include vitamins A, D, E, K and several B-complex vitamins. Minerals
Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, selenium and other minerals are required for skeletal development, osmoregulation and metabolic functions. Water..Moisture affects feed stability, storage life and processing characteristics. Many commercial aquafeeds are produced as dry pellets.

Types of Aquafeed..Live feed: algae, rotifers, Artemia and other organisms, especially for larvae. Moist feed: contains relatively high moisture and is often used in specific aquaculture systems. Dry feed: pellets, flakes, crumbles and extruded feeds. Floating feed: remains on the water surface and allows farmers to observe feeding. Sinking feed: suitable for species that naturally feed at lower depths.

Feed Ingredients..Modern aquafeed formulation increasingly combines marine, plant, microbial and insect-based ingredients. Fishmeal and fish oil remain valuable ingredients because of their nutritional quality, but sustainable alternatives are being developed to reduce dependence on wild-caught marine resources.

A few Examples include:Soy protein concentrate,Pea and wheat proteins,Insect meal,Algae and seaweed,Fermentation-derived proteins,Fish-processing by-products and Poultry & other approved animal by-products

Feed Processing…Aquafeed is manufactured through several stages:Raw materials → Grinding → Mixing → Conditioning → Extrusion/Pelletizing → Drying → Cooling → PackagingProcessing improves pellet durability, digestibility and water stability. Extrusion can also produce floating feeds.
